Bears finish 4th, Pandas 6th at CIS swim
The University of Alberta Golden Bears’ swimming team wrapped up their most successful CIS championship meet since 2002 with a fourth place finish, while the Pandas’ earned their fifth straight sixth place as the 2012 championship meet drew to a close at the University of Montreal.
Golden Bears’ rookie Joe Byram, originally from Vernon, BC, was named the CIS championship male rookie of the meet after picking up two CIS medals and breaking two U of A team records, and an Alberta provincial record. Byram claimed silver in the 100m backstroke, as well as in the 200m backstroke. Each swim was also a new team record, while his 200m time of 1:57.12 is a new provincial record. Byram was also on the Golden Bears' 4x100m medley team that won bronze.
Alberta collected four medals on the final day of competition, including Byram’s 200m silver. Veteran swimmer Brian Yakiwchuk picked up his final CIS medal when he won bronze in the 1,500m. Two of Alberta’s relay teams also hauled in bronze medals, as the Pandas’ 4x100m medley team finished in third, as did the Bears’ 4x100m medley team. Both finishes are new U of A records as well.
The Bears finished in fourth, trailing Calgary, Toronto and CIS champion UBC. It is the highest finish by the Bears since a fourth place showing at the 2002 CIS championship. On the women’s side, UBC won the title, followed by Calgary and Toronto. Laval and Western Ontario also finished ahead of the Pandas.
Alberta collected one medal on Day 1, as fifth-year Panda Erin Miller swam to a gold medal finish, and a new CIS record, in the women’s 100m fly.
On Day 2, Byram won his first medal, the 100m backstroke, while Miller picked up two more, winning the 200m fly, and collecting silver in the 50m fly race.
The U of A teams set a total of 10 new team records in Montreal.
